class="ez-toc-section-end">

A diecast scale is a ratio, not a size. It says the model is one eighteenth, or one sixty-fourth, of the real vehicle.

That ratio only becomes a size when you know the real vehicle. A 1:64 car and a 1:64 tractor-trailer share the same scale and differ by 13 cm in length. That single fact causes more ordering mistakes than any other.

So diecast car scale sizes are really four numbers:

Length, in cm and inches

Carton size, in CBM

Units per 40HQ

Freight per unit

The scale sets the first number. The packing sets the rest.

How Do You Turn a Scale Into a Real Length?

Divide the real vehicle length by the scale denominator. Use one unit throughout.

For a car 4,570 mm long at 1:43: 4,570 ÷ 43 = 106 mm.

In inches, multiply feet by 12 first. A 15 ft car is 180 in. At 1:64: 180 ÷ 64 = 2.8 in.

Two rules follow from that.

A bigger denominator means a smaller model. 1:64 is smaller than 1:18.

The real vehicle matters more than the scale. A long car at 1:64 can be bigger than a short car at 1:43.

Most catalogue sheets give you the scale and nothing else. Both labels are correct.

This is where buyers lose money. They order 1:64 assuming Hot Wheels size, then receive a tractor-trailer that needs 34 cm of shelf. Or they plan a 1:64 display and find half the range is twice the expected length.

Two habits fix it:

Ask for the model length in mm for every SKU, not the scale.

Group your range by model length, not by scale label. Shelf plans work in cm, not ratios.

What Does a 1:64 Carton Weigh and How Big Is It?

Carton data is where diecast car scale sizes turn into money. A long ocean transit, a bad carton or a 20% air shipment is a far bigger cost than the scale itself.

Where the scale does hurt is cash and turns. One 40HQ of 1:18 is 18,857 units. One 40HQ of 1:64 is 319,200. If you sell 2,000 units a month, the 1:18 container is ten months of stock. The 1:64 container is thirteen years. Neither is a real order size — you would ship LCL or mixed.

That is the practical lesson. Small scales let you fill a container with a narrow range. The box then gets a scale label that roughly matches. 1:32, 1:36 and 1:38 all appear on models that are the same physical size.

The same looseness applies at the other end. 1:64 is a trade name for “about Hot Wheels size” more than a strict ratio. Brands run slightly over and slightly under, and nobody corrects the box.

Two consequences for buyers:

A 1:36 and a 1:32 from different factories may be the same length, and priced differently.

A 1:64 from two suppliers can differ by 5 mm, enough to break a display tray.

If dimensional consistency matters, specify the target length in mm and treat the scale as a label.
