Fábrica de Brinquedos de Shantou: Como Encontrar o Fabricante de Brinquedos Certo na China
Search for a Shantou toys factory and you will find thousands of profiles by lunchtime. Almost all of them look the same. A logo, a showroom photo, a list of certificates and a promise of low MOQ.
Here is the number most of those pages leave out. In 2025, Chenghai district counted 64,200 toy businesses. Only 18,500 of them make toys. The rest trade, export, print boxes or supply parts.
So when a listing calls itself a Shantou toys factory, the odds are against it. Fewer than three in ten are producers. That is not a scandal. It is how a dense cluster works. But it changes your first question.
This page is the numbers version. What the cluster is, what a mould costs, what MOQ and FOB look like, and how to check a supplier in one afternoon.
1. What Is a Shantou Toys Factory, Really?
Shantou is the city. Chenghai is the district where the toy work happens, on about 345 km² of land.
The district publishes a breakdown that almost no sourcing page reproduces. It splits the 64,200 businesses by what they actually do.
| What the business does | Count (2025) | Roughly | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Makes toys | 18,500 | 3 in 10 | Can run your spec and your mould |
| Supplies the makers (moulds, print, packing) | 21,500 | 1 in 3 | Not a toy supplier, but a cost line |
| Trades and exports | 27,300 | 4 in 10 | Quotes fast, adds a margin, owns no machine |
Source: Shantou Investment Promotion Bureau, May 2026. The three counts add to about 67,300 against a headline of 64,200. District figures are rounded, so read this as a split, not an audit.
Read the last row twice. The largest single group in “Shantou toys factory” search results is not a factory. It is a trading company with a showroom and an English sales team.
That is not automatically bad. A trader can combine ten factories into one container, fix a box, and answer your email at 2am. A factory can do none of those things well.
The problem is price. A trader’s margin sits inside the FOB you are quoted. You cannot see it, and you cannot compare it. Our notes on showroom-linked trading companies explain how that model is priced.
2. How Big Is the Chenghai Cluster?
Big enough that the numbers sound made up. They are not, but they do drift between sources, so here is the official set.
| Measure | Figure | Year |
|---|---|---|
| Land area of Chenghai | 345 km² | — |
| Share of China’s plastic toys | more than 50% | 2025 |
| Share of the world’s plastic toys | about 33% | 2025 |
| Total toy output, all firms | over RMB 50 billion | 2025 |
| Toy firms above designated size | 228 | 2025 |
| Their output | RMB 12.77 billion | 2025 |
| Share of district industrial output | 37.5% | 2025 |
| Countries buying from here | 150+ | 2025 |
| New SKUs launched per day | over 1,000 | 2025 |
Sources: Shantou Investment Promotion Bureau and Southern Daily, both 2026.
Two corrections before you quote these anywhere.
First, the share gets inflated. You will read that Chenghai makes 70% of China’s toys, or half the world’s. The official line is over 50% of China and about one third of the world. Use that.
Second, output is not the same as export value. The RMB 50 billion figure is total industry output. Actual toy exports from Shantou in the first three quarters of 2025 were RMB 8.55 billion, with the EU up 11.4% on the year.
3. Why Can a Shantou Factory Quote 7 Days and 1,000 Pieces?
Because of what sits inside a few kilometres.
A single toy needs a mould, plastic parts, paint, pad printing, a colour box and a carton. In Chenghai those are separate businesses on separate streets. About 90% of the parts in a finished toy are bought locally.
The strange part is what the cluster does not make. Chenghai does not produce a single pellet of plastic. Every kilogram of resin arrives by truck from outside. What it produces is everything that happens after the resin.
That is why a small order is possible at all. A factory here does not need to own the whole chain. It needs to know who owns each step. The same split runs through the Chenghai toy market, where each street does one job.
Now the part the sales pages skip. Seven days means the mould already exists. Speed comes from stock tools, not from engineering. The fastest new-product turnaround quoted locally is about a week. It applies to a colour or print change on a tool that is already cut.
A new tool is a different calendar: 20 to 35 days before the first sample, and that is if the drawings are right.
So ask which one you are buying. A stock item with your logo is a 7-day job. Your own design is a 7-week job. Both are fine. Only one of them is cheap.
4. Which Factory Type Do You Need?
One factory cannot make your whole range. A plant that is excellent at injection-moulded cars is the wrong call for a doll with rooted hair.
| Factory type | Makes | Cannot do |
|---|---|---|
| Injection and assembly | Cars, playsets, baby toys, kitchen sets, bubble guns | Electronics, fabric, wood |
| Electronic and RC | RC cars, drones, robots, light-and-sound | High-end hobby grade, LiPo safety files |
| blocos de construção | Brick sets, compatible parts, puzzle kits | Non-brick construction, licence characters |
| Doll and pretend play | Dolls, tea sets, doctor kits, dress-up | Plush bodies, rooted hair at scale |
| Outdoor and sport | Scooters, water tables, sand sets, balls | Anything needing fabric or foam |
| Novelty and seasonal | Fidget, party, Halloween, gift packs | Year-round depth, spare parts |
Read the middle column as a filter, not a promise. Most plants overlap two rows.
Read the right column as your test. Plush is Yangzhou. Wood is Yunhe. Die-cast is Dongguan. A Chenghai factory that quotes all four is not a factory. See fabricantes de brinquedos na China for how the clusters divide.
Novelty is the widest row and the thinnest margin. Bulk fidget toys shows what that looks like at factory level: thousands of units, cents per piece, almost no tool.

5. What Does a Mould Cost, and Who Owns It?
This is the number that decides whether your product can exist. A Shantou toys factory will quote a tool in a day. That quote is often wrong by a factor of three until the drawings are fixed.
| Mould type | Cost (RMB) | Typical product | Units to absorb it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Simple, single cavity | 5,000–20,000 | Small figure, keychain, simple car body | 30,000–50,000 |
| Fine steel, multi-part | 20,000–50,000 | Light-and-sound toy, small RC body | 50,000–100,000 |
| Complex, multi-cavity | 100,000–500,000 | Large playset, precision brick parts | 100,000+ |
Mould shop quotes, Guangdong, 2025–2026. Treat as a rough guide, not a promise.
The arithmetic matters more than the range. Take a RMB 20,000 tool.
- No 50,000 units, the tool adds RMB 0.40 per unit. About six US cents.
- No 5,000 units, it adds RMB 4.00 per unit. About 58 cents.
On a toy that sells for 30 cents FOB, the second case costs twice the product. This is why small runs are not cheaper. They are the same run with the tool spread thinner.
Industry cost models put mould amortisation at 8–12% of unit cost. That is the normal band. If a quote shows 30%, the tool is being paid off in one order.
Then the clause that outlives the order: who owns the mould. Pay for it and get the invoice, the tool drawing and a photo of the tool with your job number. Let the factory absorb the cost and it stays theirs, which locks you in for the life of the product.
6. What MOQ Should You Expect?
MOQ is not one number. It moves with how much you change.
| What you order | MOQ seen | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Stock item, no change | 100–500 | Already in the warehouse |
| Stock item, logo on box | 500–1,000 | Print set-up only |
| Stock item, new colour | 1,000–3,000 | Colour run, cleaning, scrap |
| Your design, existing tool | 1,000–3,000 | Same tool, your box |
| Your design, new tool | 3,000–10,000 | Tool payback |
| Blind box or collectible | 3,000+ | Assortment ratio |
| RC car, mixed container | 180–1,000 | Carton count, not tool |
From factory listings and 1688 quotes, October 2026.
Two things follow.
The cheap way in is a box, not a mould. A logo on an existing colour box costs a print set-up. A new colour costs a run. A new shape costs a tool. Most first orders should buy the first one.
Mixed containers are the real lever. A 180-piece RC order is possible because the carton fits beside other SKUs. Ask for a mixed container quote before you ask for a lower MOQ. Our China toy wholesale notes list current MOQs by category.

7. What FOB Price Should You Budget?
Price follows part count and electronics, not size. The clearest proof is one scale, four prices.
| Produto | MOQ seen | FOB, Oct 2026 | What you pay for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 cm PVC figure | 1,000 | $0.19–0.29 | One mould, one print pass |
| 1:18 RC, toy grade | 180–3,600 | $4.40–5.20 | 2.4 GHz board, one battery |
| 1:18 RC, climbing | 90 | $7.70–8.70 | 4WD, bigger tyres |
| 1:18 RC, hobby kit | 1,000 | $31–34 | Brushless motor, bearings, spares |
From live supplier listings, October 2026. Rough guide, not a promise.
Same scale. Same plastic. Six times the price spread. Nobody is lying about the size. The difference is inside the shell: a chip, a bearing, a battery, a spare parts bag.
Use that when you benchmark. “How much is a 1:18 RC car from Shantou” has no answer. “How much is a 1:18 RC car with a 2.4 GHz board and one 3.7V battery” does.
Baby toys sit in a different band, because the test file is larger and the moulds are simpler. The baby toy price guide gives those figures.
8. How Long Does an Order Take?
Add the stages, do not average them.
| Stage | Days | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Hand sample from stock | 5–7 | Free or refunded at MOQ |
| New tool | 20–35 | Starts after drawing approval |
| T1 sample from new tool | 3–5 | Fix list comes out of this |
| Mass production | 15–45 | 15–20 off season, 45 in peak |
| Pre-shipment inspection | 1–3 | Before balance payment |
| Sea freight to Europe | 26–32 | Via Shenzhen or Nansha |
| Clearance and delivery | 7–15 | Port to door |
Factory listings plus forwarder schedules, October 2026.
Sample cost is separate from all of it. A stock sample is usually free, with you paying the freight. A custom sample runs $50–150, refunded when you place the MOQ order. Ask both numbers before you ask for the sample.
Work backwards from the shelf date. Goods on a European shelf by 1 March means a container leaving Shantou around 25 January. That means production starting mid-December, which means the tool must be cut by mid-November.
A new toy ordered in January cannot be on a spring shelf. It can be on an autumn one.
Peak season is the other trap. August to October is Christmas production. A factory that quotes 20 days in June will quote 45 in September, and both answers are honest.
9. How Do You Tell a Factory From a Trading Company?
Six checks, all free, all doable before you send money. Any Shantou toys factory should pass all six in a week. If you would rather read the short answers first, sourcing from Shantou toys covers the common versions.
| Check | Where | Trader | Factory |
|---|---|---|---|
| Business licence | gsxt.gov.cn | Scope says sales, trade | Scope says production, manufacturing |
| Export filing | Customs credit platform | Registered as consignor | Same, plus a plant address |
| Address | Licence vs listing | Office tower or showroom | Industrial road, workshop number |
| Machines | Video call | Cannot show a line | Can count injection machines |
| Power bill | On request | Changes the subject | Sends a redacted copy |
| Tool photo | On request | Sends a catalogue image | Sends a dated photo of the tool |
The fastest one is the last. Ask for a photo of the mould with today’s date in frame. A factory walks ten metres and takes it. A trader cannot.
Then three questions that end most conversations:
- Which machine makes this part, and how many cavities does the tool have?
- Who cuts the tool, and can I see the tool drawing?
- If I book a video call tomorrow, can you walk the camera to the end of the workshop?
Vague answers are not proof of fraud. They are proof that you are talking to a sales office. That is still usable, as long as the price reflects it.
If you want the checks done in person, a local agent can run them in a day. See Shantou toys agent.

10. What Should Be in the Spec Sheet?
A chat photo is not a spec. Neither is a catalogue page. The spec sheet is the only document you can inspect against, and it costs nothing to write.
Ten lines cover most plastic toys:
- Model code and artwork version
- Finished size and weight, with a tolerance
- Plastic grade per part: ABS, PP, PVC, PS
- Colour references, in Pantone numbers
- Part count, plus the spare parts list
- Battery type, whether it is included, and the charger
- Age grade and warning text, per market
- Carton size, units per carton, gross weight
- Barcode and shipping mark artwork
- Test standard and market, named
Sign it before the tool is cut. Every change after that is a change order, and change orders are where timelines go.
Keep one signed copy and one approved sample in the same box. When the goods arrive and something looks wrong, the argument is short.
11. What Goes Wrong Most Often?
Five failures cover most first orders.
| Trap | How it shows up | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Hidden trader margin | 5–15% above factory price, no line item | Ask for the factory name on the invoice |
| “New” sold as exclusive | Same design on three other listings | Get exclusivity in writing, with a term |
| Report for another SKU | Certificate names a different model | Match model, colour, age grade, market |
| Cheap unit, expensive volume | Low FOB, huge carton | Price the CBM, not the piece |
| Deposit to a personal account | Bank details do not match the licence | Pay the company account only |
The fourth one catches experienced buyers. A toy at $0.29 that ships 200 pieces per carton is cheaper per unit and dearer per container than a $0.45 toy at 500 per carton. Section 11 does that maths.
The third one is a compliance issue, not a paperwork issue. A report that names another model protects nobody. Our guide to toy testing labs covers what a valid file contains.
12. How Do You Ship and Pay From Shantou?
Start with the carton, because the carton decides the freight.
| Produto | Carton | Units per carton | 20GP (about 28 CBM) | 40HQ (about 68 CBM) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6 cm figure | 45 × 35 × 35 cm, 0.055 CBM | 500 | about 254,000 pcs | about 618,000 pcs |
| 1:18 RC car | 0.278 CBM | 36 | about 3,600 pcs | about 8,800 pcs |
Supplier carton specs. Container figures are a rule of thumb, not a booking.
One 40-foot box holds 618,000 small figures or 8,800 RC cars. Same container, same freight bill. That is the whole argument for designing small, or for accepting that freight is part of your product.
On ports: Shantou is a feeder port. Most export boxes move by short sea or truck to Yantian or Nansha and join an ocean vessel there. Add one to two days, and book through a forwarder who does this weekly.
Payment follows the trade, not the other way round. The common terms here are 30–50% deposit, balance before shipment, by T/T. Letters of credit are possible above roughly $50,000, and rarely worth it below.
Fix the Incoterm in writing. FOB Shantou is normal. FOB Shenzhen costs a little more and buys you a wider choice of sailings. CIF means the supplier books, which is convenient and hard to audit.
The full sequence, from deposit to arrival, sits in how to import toys from China. Duty rates, broker fees and the paperwork list sit in the wider import guide.
Cargo moves under HS 9503, and plastic toys usually clear as 9503008900. Let your broker confirm the eight-digit split before the first booking. The duty line follows it.
One more line worth asking for. Most Shantou toys factory quotes stop at FOB, which leaves the container, the insurance and the port charges to you. Ask for a landed estimate to your warehouse door, and compare that.

13. When Should You Go to Shantou?
If you can only go once, go for the fair.
O 25th Shantou Chenghai International Toys and Gifts Fair runs from 29 October to 1 November 2026 at the Shantou International Convention Centre. It covers more than 100,000 m², with 11 halls, over 2,500 brands and an expected 180,000 trade visitors. That is ten days from now.
A fair does one thing no catalogue can. It lets you stand in front of five factories making the same product in one afternoon. Price differences stop looking random.
Come with a hotel booked near the halls. Hotels near the toy market fill early in fair week, and the drive from the city centre costs you a morning.
The rest of the year, the showrooms do the work. There are nine main halls, and they are not factories. Our Shantou toy showroom guide maps them. The fair page covers the hall layout. And what a showroom actually is explains why the price you hear there is not a factory price.
If you have a day spare, the Chenghai toys warehouse is where stock lots surface. It is a different trade from custom work.
For a smaller trip with a fixed agenda, a sample sourcing event brings the factories to one room. That is a different job from walking a workshop, and it suits buyers who already know their spec.
14. FAQ: Shantou Toys Factory
Is Shantou the same as Chenghai? Chenghai is a district of Shantou. When people say Shantou toys, they usually mean Chenghai. The city is bigger, the toy cluster is concentrated there.
Can I order 500 pieces? Yes, for a stock item with your logo on the box. Not for a new mould. A new tool at 500 units adds several dollars per piece, which usually kills the product.
Do Shantou factories make wooden or plush toys? A few do, mostly for local brands. The cluster is built on plastic. Wood is Yunhe, plush is Yangzhou. Buying wood here usually means a trader.
How much is a 20GP from Shantou to Europe? Rates move monthly, so no page can answer this. What you can fix is the volume: a 20GP holds about 28 CBM of cargo, and 0.278 CBM per RC carton means roughly 100 cartons.
What documents should I get before paying? Business licence, export filing, a report that names your exact model and market, and a signed spec sheet with the carton dimensions. The spec sheet matters most, because it is the only document you can inspect against.
15. Final Thoughts
A Shantou toys factory is not hard to find. Finding one that makes your product, at your volume, with its own machines, is the actual work.
Four numbers decide whether a project works: the tool cost, the MOQ, the carton volume and the calendar. Get those four in writing before you discuss design.
If you want a second opinion on a quote you already hold, send it over. We will tell you which line looks like a trader margin and which one looks like a real tool cost. Start with the sourcing inquiry page, or browse the current Shantou range first.
If you would rather buy stock than build a product, the other route is a toy distributor. It costs more per unit and less per mistake.
